Domestic Workers' Bill of Rights (DWBOR) Law
On August 12, 2016, Governor Bruce Rauner signed House Bill 1288 into law, making Illinois the sixth state to pass a comprehensive Domestic Workers Bill of Rights and the seventh state to extend rights to domestic workers. The bill grants basic labor protections to caregivers, nannies, house cleaners and other privately employed domestic workers, which they have long been denied.
The Domestic Workers' Bill of Rights provides the following protections:
The right to be paid at least a minimum wage in Illinois.
The right to one day of rest each week for those who work 20 hours or more for an employer.
The right to be protected against sexual harassment in the workplace.
All of which has been made possible by the many years of hard work, perseverance, and commitment to the livelihoods of domestic workers. AFIRE Chicago, in power with fellow community organizations and policy groups (see below), could not champion this feat alone!
