Position: Community Organizer (Full-Time, Exempt)

About AFIRE

The Alliance of Filipinos for Immigrant Rights and Empowerment (AFIRE) is a grassroots community organization that builds the capacity of Filipino/a/xs to organize on issues of social, racial, and economic justice that affect undocumented immigrants, domestic workers, seniors, and youth.

Position Summary

The Community Organizer will engage Filipinx community members and stakeholders in order to advance AFIRE’s mission and organizing priorities with undocumented immigrants, domestic workers, seniors, and youth. Under the supervision of the current Community Organizer and Executive Director, the new Community Organizer will plan, execute, and evaluate AFIRE’s programs in order to develop the leadership abilities and organizing capacity of Filipinx community members. Start date in June 1, 2017

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and execute an organizing strategy for engaging Filipinx community members in line with AFIRE’s mission/vision/values and priorities

  • Work directly with Filipinx community of diverse backgrounds (especially undocumented immigrants and Filipino/a/x domestic workers) in group settings and individually in 1-on-1 meetings to increase membership, promote our programs and execute campaigns

  • Create agendas and facilitate regular meetings or workshops with community members

  • Develop resources or community guides (both in English and Tagalog) to raise awareness regarding domestic workers and immigrant rights

  • Collaborate with the VISTA Community Outreach Coordinator to create communications for use in print media and email

  • Draft press releases, organizational statements, or collect oral histories when needed

  • Work with current coalitions and coordinate collaborative activities

  • Attend trainings on programs or organizing as needed

  • Report to the Executive Director

  • Other responsibilities as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in community organizing is strongly preferred including experience in developing and leading campaigns

  • Experience in working with the Filipinx community, especially experience working with different generations of immigrant communities

  • Experience in working with coalitions

  • Ability to work independently and as a collaborative team

  • Strong commitment to progressive social, racial, and economic justice issues

  • Strong interpersonal and relationship building skills

REQUIREMENTS

  • Two-year commitment

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Flexible working hours including evenings and weekends

  • Reliable transportation and/or use of personal vehicle (with valid driver’s license and liability insurance) is required

  • Knowledge and use of MS Office, Email, Google Productivity applications

  • Bilingual in English and Tagalog preferred

COMPENSATION

  • Commensurate based on experience
