Executive Director


The Alliance of Filipinos for Immigrant Rights and Empowerment (AFIRE) is a grassroots community organization that builds the capacity of Filipino/a/xs to organize on issues of social, racial, and economic justice that affect undocumented immigrants, domestic workers, seniors, and youth.


The Executive Director is responsible for the overall management of activities, goals, and strategic plan for AFIRE and its mission. The Executive Director will ensure the organization moves toward realizing the vision of AFIRE by working with the Board of Directors, staff, members, and volunteers. Specific responsibilities are listed below.


  • Personnel Management (25%)

  • Oversee a staff of six people (four full-time and two part-time)

  • Directly supervise the Program & Operations Manager, two Community Organizers, and Outreach Coordinator

  • Conduct work plan meetings, supervisory check-in meetings, mid-year evaluations, and annual performance reviews

  • Program Administration (20%)

  • Oversee all AFIRE programs including their development, management, and evaluation

  • Create budgets for programs and monitor their progress

  • Assign and delegate responsibilities to staff

  • Advocacy & Community Organizing (10%)

  • Lead AFIRE’s advocacy and community organizing strategy and implementation

  • Advance AFIRE’s advocacy and developing issues from grassroots community leaders

  • Supervise Community Organizers in the areas of immigration, workers rights, membership development, and grassroots leadership development

  • Maintain and develop relationships with advocacy and community organizing partnerships

  • Represent AFIRE at coalition meetings on various issues of immigration, workers rights, and general issues that impact Asian Americans/Filipinx/Filipinx Americans

  • Develop relationships with Filipino community stakeholders including other community groups, church groups, government officials, and Filipino media

  • Create articles and press releases for media contacts

  • Board Development (5%)

  • Work closely with the board to develop and monitor organization policies and practices

  • Update board about financial and legal status related to the organization

  • Provide information to the board during board meetings

  • Support the Board of Directors in annual Board evaluations, board development, recruitment, and onboarding

  • Resource Development (20%)

  • Research foundation prospects

  • Write Letters of Inquiry, grant proposals, and evaluation reports for foundations and other funders

  • Develop fundraising campaigns such as special events, Giving Days, end-of-year appeal letters, and other opportunities to generate revenue

  • Finance & Administration (20%)

  • Coordinate with contractual bookkeeper to ensure sound fiscal management

  • Create and monitor organizational budgets, revenues, expenses, and cash flow

  • Prepare financial reports for Board review on a regular basis

  • Ensure financial and fiduciary protocols are followed

  • Ensure the financial audit is prepared annually

  • Maintain organizational operations and legal compliance for non-profit organizations

  • Supervise human resources including personnel policies, payroll, benefits, and health insurance

  • Issue payments and reimbursements to contractors, vendors, and staff


  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent life experience

  • 5+ years of experience in non-profit, business, or management

  • Experience in fundraising, program management, operations

  • Commitment to immigrant rights, workers rights, and social/racial/economic justice

  • Comprehensive understanding of advocacy, civic engagement, and community organizing

  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to provide leadership to staff, board, and members

  • Access to reliable transportation throughout the City of Chicago (vehicle preferred) and ability to meet a flexible schedule as needed

  • Filipino language (Tagalog or Bisaya) and English proficiency strongly preferred; native speaker is desired


  • Commensurate based on experience
