Immigrant Rights Organizer + NAI Outreach Coordinator (Full-Time)
ABOUT AFIRE
The Alliance of Filipinos for Immigrant Rights and Empowerment (AFIRE) is a grassroots community organization that builds the capacity of Filipino/a/xs to organize on issues of social, racial, and economic justice that affect undocumented immigrants, domestic workers, seniors, and youth.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Immigrant Rights Organizer will engage Filipinx community members and stakeholders in order to advance AFIRE’s mission and organizing priorities with undocumented immigrants, domestic workers, seniors, and youth. This person would also take on the responsibilities of an NAI Outreach Coordinator to meet the citizenship assistance workshop deliverables. Under the supervision of the Executive Director and in collaboration with the AFIRE staff, the immigrant rights organizer will plan, execute, and evaluate AFIRE’s programs in order to develop the leadership abilities and organizing capacity of Filipinx community members, while also outreaching to the community using the platform of the NAI Citizenship Application Assistance Workshop.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide opportunities for leadership development & relationship building in immigration coalition spaces: Pan-Asian Voter Empowerment coalition (PAVE), Chicago Immigrant Working Group (CIWG), Campaign for a Welcoming Illinois (ICIRR), Value our Families platform (Asian Americans Advancing Justice - Chicago)
Provide consistent opportunities for community members of diverse backgrounds (especially undocumented immigrants and Filipino/a/x domestic workers) to link their own experiences to immigrant rights issues at the national, state, and local levels
Create agendas and facilitate regular meetings and workshops with community members
Develop resources to raise awareness regarding immigrant rights
Build organizing capacity and decentralized leadership through immigrant rights breakout sessions at general membership meetings
Mobilize around major action days/celebration days
Continue developing our leadership capacity through providing trainings and coaching
Recruit and train immigrant rights organizers through the Citizenship Assistance workshop
Develop member-led organizational resources that guide our organizing work
Maintain and develop streamlined systems of outreach and follow up to use across all programs and events.
Attend trainings on programs or organizing as needed
Outreach to the Filipino community to identify legal permanent residents who may be eligible to apply for U.S. Citizenship
Recruit and train volunteers for outreach and application assistance at workshops
Coordinate staff, volunteers, and applicants at workshops
Attend NAI collaborative meetings with Erie Neighborhood House, LSNA, and others to strategize about citizenship workshops
Meet grant deliverables from the Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS) and the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR)
Coordinate with lead agency, ICIRR for materials, trainings, meetings, and other resources needed
Create, maintain and modify record keeping process in collaboration with office assistants and organizers to collect and organize intake information used for reporting into Salesforce and internal database
Provide referrals to partner organizations on issues like domestic violence, health insurance, senior benefits, or affordable housing
Attend trainings, orientation, and staff meetings to report on work conducted
Report to the Executive Director
Other duties as needed related to the above responsibilities and as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
Must be fluent in Filipino language (Tagalog or Bisaya) and English. Native speaker is highly desired
Strong commitment to immigrant rights, workers rights, and progressive social/racial/economic justice
Experience in community organizing is strongly preferred including experience in developing and leading campaigns.
Experience in working with and knowledge of the Filipinx community, especially experience working with different generations of immigrant communities
Experience working in coalitions
Ability to work independently and as a collaborative team
Excellent written and verbal communications skills
Excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills and ability to provide leadership to staff, board, and members
Working some Saturdays will be required
Background or experience in immigration law concepts is a plus
Excellent knowledge of MS Office and Google Apps (i.e. Gmail, Docs, Sheets, and Calendar)
Accurate, organized, and detail-oriented
Ability to maintain confidential information
Access to reliable transportation throughout the City of Chicago
COMPENSATION
$17 / per hour; other benefits include paid time off for sick & vacation, and pro-rated paid holidays
